Threats to Marine Life
Marine ecosystems face countless challenges that can affect the animals, underwater plants, and all their environments they depend on, such as coral reefs. Understanding what causes these challenges is an important part of understanding and being a part of marine conservation.
Pollution
Pollution can enter the ocean from also countless and various sources. Plastic waste, chemicals, and other forms of pollution can harm marine organisms and damage their habitats.
Climate Change
Global Warming, which causes changes in the climate are causing ocean temperatures to rise and harming marine ecosystems. These changes can create challenges for species that depend on specific environmental conditions. A notable one is coral reef bleaching, which occurs when ocean tempertatures get too warm for the algae they eat/ grows on them to produce, leaving them with no food and causes them to die. 25% of all marine life depend on coral reefs for survival.
Overfishing
Fishing is an important source of food and income for many communities, but unsustainable fishing practices, such as commerical fishing and bottom trawling can not put pressure on marine populations but destory them and ultamitely affect the balance of ocean ecosystems.
What Can We Do?
- Reduce unnecessary plastic use.
- Dispose of waste properly.
- Learn more about ocean ecosystems.
- Support marine conservation efforts.
- Make thoughtful choices that reduce environmental impacts.
